a sudden tension moved through the space before me.

The beginning of the American bison rut—
the season of breeding.
A time when males test their strength,
when instinct rises to the surface of the earth.
Two massive forms, facing one another.
In nature, everything is instinct,
and everything belongs to balance.
In that silent instant,
something was decided.
They quietly passed each other,
and disappeared into the openness of the prairie.
